A-STEP 2030 research outputs at World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development

Representatives from the A-STEP 2030 project joined the Engineers Ireland's community for the launch of World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development on 4th March.

World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development is a UNESCO international day to highlight the achievements of engineers and improve public understanding of how engineering is central to sustainable development.

David Donoghue, former Permanent Representative of Ireland to the United Nations, launched the event. Mr Donoghue co-facilitated the complex UN negotiations which led to agreement on the Sustainable Development Goals.

Una Beagon, representing TU Dublin as a partner on the A-STEP 2030 project took part in a panel discussion on the skills engineers need to solve the SDGs and outlined the results of the first activity in the project. She highlighted the need for both technical and non-technical skills and the importance of attitudes and values in engineers and engineering students in order to meet the needs of the future.

The event also launched the Engineering 2020: A barometer of the profession in Ireland report which captures the latest trends in engineering employment and education and the contribution of the profession to the SDGs.
